David Maisel - History's Shadow

This one is on my Christmas list for sure:

Publisher's Description
David Maisel’s work has always been concerned with processes of memory, excavation, and transformation. These themes are given new form in his latest work, History’s Shadow. In this series, Maisel re-photographs x-rays from museum archives that depict artifacts from antiquity, scanning and digitally manipulating the selected source material. X-rays have historically been used by art conservators for structural examination of art and artifacts much as physicians examine bones and internal organs; they reveal losses, replacements, construction methods, and internal trauma invisible to the naked eye. By transcribing both the inner and outer surfaces of their subjects simultaneously, they form spectral images of indeterminate space, depth, and scale. The resulting photographs seem like transmissions from the distant past, both spanning and collapsing time. They express – through feeling and art, as well as science and reason – the shape-shifting nature of time itself, and the continuous presence of the past contained within us. The book contains an original short story by Jonathan Lethem that was inspired by Maisel’s images.

Barry Stone - Dark Side of the Rainbow at Art Palace, Houston

 Barry Stone
"Darkside of the Rainbow" (Exhibition view including from left to right, Positive Eclipse of 1919, Promises Promises, Negative Eclipse of 1919, all 2011)
Courtesy of the artist

The title of Barry Stone’s first solo exhibition at Art Palace, Dark Side of the Rainbow, refers to the cultural phenomenon of playing Pink Floyd’s 1973 album The Dark Side of the Moon as the soundtrack for Victor Fleming’s1939 film The Wizard of Oz. Fans claim there are moments when the lyrics or music correspond to the action in the film. References to Dark Side of the Rainbow appear throughout photographs, drawings and paintings in the show.

Libby Rowe - Dwellings

"I am intrigued by the dual meaning of the word dwelling. How the “mental state” of dwelling is seen as definitively negative, but the “home” dwelling is at definition neutral but in reality holds the potential for both positive and negative associations. This series of photographs uses physical dwellings made from materials that, along with their environments, suggest a state of contemplation." - Libby Rowe

"Photography Is" - by Mishka Henner

Mishka Henner / Works

Photography Is

"Photography Is presents more than 3,000 phrases that define one of the most democratic and ubiquitous of all art forms. Mirroring the ambiguous and untrustworthy nature of photographs themselves, each phrase in this book has been torn from the context in which it originally appeared. The result is contradictory and chaotic, frustrating and insightful. In short, it is photography, without photographs."

Jennifer Mason's Digitally Constructed Spaces

"The images I digitally create have one of two objectives: I am either trying to create spaces that help evoke feelings of unease, discomfort and anxiety to create a physical space that closer matches my internal experience of reality, or I want to propose and digitally construct new spaces that provide a hiding place, with an eerily, sleepy banality in which one could just disappear." - Jennifer Mason

RealTime UnReal in Montreal

"RealTime UnReal turns the MACM’s black box into a seductive site to behold. The use of state-of-the art Barco projectors and a Stewart Silver 5D Filmscreen, along with very sophisticated lighting as well as a floating (i.e. hanging from ceiling as opposed to grounded) square structure marking the perimeter of the user’s space, all contribute to a making the virtual experience believable..."

New Exhibitions at Southeast Museum of Photography Open

Gysgt. Carlos "OJ" Orjuela age 31, Garmsir, Afghanistan
Louie Palu

Just a quick jaunt from Winter Park, the Southeast Museum of Photography in Daytona is a great local resource. I highly encourage you all to make it a point to visit at some point. The current exhibition is very timely. An Artist’s Panel Discussion will be held on Friday, September 23, 2011 at 6:00 pm; reception to follow.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

IN REVIEW: WAR
Ed Grazda, Louie Palu, Lucian Perkins and Christopher Sims

"After ten years of turmoil, uncertainty and conflict we confront the anniversary of the events of September 11th. What has happened since then, and how have photographers helped shape our understanding of these complex events and the circumstances surrounding them? Four photographers and four dramatically different records are presented alongside images made at the actual site of what has become known as “ground zero” on that September day in 2001.

Each photographer has created a unique archive that powerfully articulates their own particular understanding of the forces in play in these events. Drawing from the fields of portraiture, documentary and reportage photography; each series forms an authentic and engaging facet of the not-yet-complete archive of an elusive global conflict, and a series of wars that have not yet fully ended. Featuring the photography of Ed Grazda, Louie Palu, Lucian Perkins and Christopher Sims"

Studio Art Senior Natascha Vazquez Creates Public Art in The Bahamas

The above images are from the ambitious project that Natascha worked on over the summer. About this project, Natascha says:

"I got a group of art majors from the College of the Bahamas to come to Abaco (a remote outer island in the Bahamas) to create a public art piece out of found material that has been washed up on the beaches in Southern Abaco. These beaches are on the Atlantic side of the island, catching tons of debris that has been floating in the ocean for years, and finally washes up on shore. I thought it would be interesting to utilize this free "art material" in interesting, artistic ways while at the same time, clean the beach and create awareness of pollution.

We decided to create the bow of a boat, pertruding out of a cliff that we thought would be an appropriate site for this particular piece. It was challenging because of the height, but we found solutions. The
reason we chose a boat was to educate people on where exactly these trash items are coming from, and to present viewers with an art piece which seems beautiful, but dirty at the same time. The trash that has
been washed up on the shore-line is situated in such a beautiful place, and doesn't belong in that spot."
